The White House was placed into lockdown for just under an
hour Friday afternoon after a shooting near the executive branch complex.
A man carrying a firearm approached a security checkpoint on
the outer perimeter of the White House grounds on E St., NW, just after 3 p.m.,
according to a Secret Service spokesman.
The man was shot once by a Secret Service agent and taken
into custody after ignoring “numerous verbal commands” from uniformed officers
“to stop and drop the firearm.”
The suspect was transported to a local hospital to receive
medical treatment. D.C. Fire and EMS tweeted that the person sustained critical
injuries.
An agency source said the man never gained access to White
House grounds and no law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured.
Vice President Joe Biden, who was on the White House grounds
when the incident occurred, was secured at the complex.
President Obama was not inside the White House at the time
of the incident; he was at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland golfing with
aides.
Obama was "made aware" of the shooting, a White
House official said.
"No one within or associated with the White House was
injured, and everyone in the White House is safe and accounted for,” the
official added.
The incident caused a stir at the White House and in the
surrounding area, which was crowded with tourists and area workers.
Reporters inside the White House were told to remain inside
and shelter in place after the incident. The lockdown was lifted at about 4
p.m.
