My youngest brother was shot around 10 pm Wednesday in Barangay Sta. Maria, in Zamboanga City. The perpetrators were onboard a single motorcycle. He was attacked while he was inside his car. A bullet pierced through his neck. While he survived the attack, his condition is still unstable.
The motive in the attack is something that we still do not know. But what we know is that it is the culture of violence and impunity pervading in the city whose officials appear to be oblivious or unperturbed by the fact that civilians are becoming hapless victims of these senseless attacks.
In Zamboanga City, criminals run free. No one is brought to justice. In Zamboanga City, the rule of law has long crumbled down.
More than three years ago, I took part in an investigation conducted by an international human rights group on the armed attacks that had victimized more than a hundred already. Since then, things have turned from bad to worse.
We can only wonder whether it is still safe to live in Zamboanga City.
This is appalling. This is highly condemnable.
The slay attempt on my brother Wednesday night in Zamboanga City is a proof of the continued unabated murderous spree happening in the city and exposed the inutility of the local authorities to protect civilians. (By. Amir Mawallil)
