VALUES CAN ONLY BE CAUGHT, NOT TAUGHT
Only a person
with authority can say, “Do what I say and do what I do”. Or in bisayan term
“buhata ang gisulte ug g buhat ko”.
A married couple
confesses that every time they quarrel, they see to it that they speak with
each other with a listening heart, not just hearing the words without
understanding the meaning. With this beautiful example of sincere dialogue of
the couple, that after they misunderstand each other, they will dialogue and
tries to understand each other’s point of views. And then they forgive each other and start
being friends all over again.
What the couple
do to each other, this is what the children imitate, the children also dialogue
after they quarrel, then they forgive each other and kiss/hug each other as if nothing
bad happens to them at all. In other words, they follow their parents’ good
example of dialogue and forgiveness.
The attitude and
the value of listening to and dialogue with each other are caught by the
children. Without the parents teaching the children what values and attitude to
learn, the children absorbed those values attitude just by observation. Not by
hearing the values and attitude taught verbally.
Truly, values and attitude cannot be
taught. They only be Caught. (By: Prof. Rose A. Barrera Co-Anchor of
