6 DEAD AFTER ARMY CORPORAL AMOK INSIDE CAMP

                      6 dead after Army corporal amok inside camp

  (2nd UPDATE) at least 6 are killed and 9 injured as army corporal shoots his fellow soldiers in Sumisip town. Basilan.

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – at least  6 soldiers, including 2 officers, were killed after an army corporal ran amok inside an army camp in Sumisip town, Basilan on Thursday, October 22.
According to Colonel Melsan Recaido, a corporal from the 64 Infantry Battalion (IB) began shooting inside the unit’s headquarters in Sumisip just before 9am.

It was initially reported that only 4 were killed and 11 injured  but in a briefing with media in Manila, Army spokesman Colonel Benjamin Hao said 6 were killed while 9 were injured.
“We believe it is an isolated but we will look closer into its medical and psychological aspect in order to determine the root cause of the case”’ Hao said in the statement.
According Hao the dead and wounded are being transported to Tabiawan, Isabela at the 104th infantry brigade before they will be airlifted to a military hospital at the Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City.

The shooter was identified as Corporal Tahiruddin Taha, a member of the 64th IB’s Bravo Company.
Hao said the shooting happened during  a Bible study session inside the same camp. The pastor who led the Bible study was also among those killed, said Hao.

“Right now and 64th infantry battalion ay nagoconduct ng investigation para sa sitwasyong io, ang Philippine army nagalert na kami ng isang team ng mga doctor at mga psychologist para ipadala sa Basilan upang magconduct ng Medical at Psychologist intervention.” Hao told the media

(Right now the 64th infantry battalion is conducting an investigation, The Philippine army alerted of doctors and psychologist to send to Basilan to conduct medical and psychological intervention.)
He added; “Normally, pag may mga ganitong sitwasyon kasi binibigyan agad natin ng mga psychological support ‘yung ating kasundaluhan.” (Normally, when we have these situations we give our soldiers psychological support immediately)


The names of the victims have not been released because the families are still being informed of the deaths, Hao said. He added that the Philippine Army will also provide financial assistance to the family of the Victims.-     Bea Cupi/Rappler.com
