On the Multi-Sectoral Forum on
the West Philippine Sea Issue: The Narrative presentation by ASec. Charles Jose
who is the guest presentor in this forum participated and attended by the
multi-sectoral group has enlightened most of us who are in attendance in two
days activities on SCS/WPS issue.
As explained by ASec Jose said,
OUR HISTORY…1. We have legitimate rights in South China Sea/West Philippine
enshrined in the International law, 2. But China is claiming what is ours, and
3. We should defend what is rightfully ours.
In the UNCLOS documents: 1. 1982
United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 2.Concluded in 1982; came into
force in 1994, and 3. 166 countries & EU have joined the Convention (as of
January 2015).
UNCLOS documents also: 1. Philippines
signed on 10 December 1982 and deposited instrument of ratification on 8 May
1984, and 2. China signed on 10 December 1982 and deposited instrument of
ratification on 7 June 1996.
UNCLOS Provisions: 1.
“Constitution of the Ocean” 1.1. Defines the rights and responsibilities of
nations with respect to their use of the world’s ocean; 1.2. Defines the extent
of maritime territories nations could claim; 1.3. Establishes guidelines for
business, the environment, and the management of marine natural resources.
Our waters, our wealth-
1. PH
is 2nd biggest archipelago in the world, after Indonesia.
2. PH’s
7,107 islands make up only 1/6 of PH territory. The bigger part of PH (5/6) is
a vast stretch of waters in and around these islands.
3. At
least 5million Filipinos depend on PH waters for livelihood.
Core Issue A-
One of the core issues is China’s
claim of so-called “indisputable sovereignty” over nearly the entire South
China Sea (SCS), as represented by the nine-dash line.
