Good morning……

According to the National Coffee Association of USA, Incorporated, coffee grown worldwide can trace its heritage to the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau. Coffee trees still grow as they have for centuries in the Ethiopian highlands, where legend says the goat herder, kaldi, first discovered the potential of these beloved beans.

Throughout the years, as it reached all parts of the globe, coffee endured itself as one of the most cherished beans. At present, according to the Nescafe, coffee production involves 60 million people; it only means that it is very large industry with so much opportunities. And, here in the Philippines, we cannot deny the fact that coffee is part of our culture; drinking coffee during siesta hours, breakfast, and even among social gatherings.
And now, this 2nd Regional Coffee Congress is a treatment that we, Pinoys, love coffee a lot. Our theme, “Kape-yapaan: Susi sa Tagumpay at Maunlad na Pamayanan Tungo sa ASEAN Integration,” declares the significance of this industry in our country, that it is not only a key to progressive community, but in effect, boosts vitality in the coming of the ASEAN integration.

DA RFO 12, for its part, guarantees that our coffee growers, processors, and traders in the region have all the support to continue the positive growth in their sector. We dished out interventions to local government units and coffee farmer associations such as coffee de-huller, coffee de-pulper, coffee roaster, coffee dryer, coffee roasting facilities, planting materials and many more.

Through these inventions, we are proud to inform you that SOCCKSARGEN is undeniably Philippine’s top coffee producer, wherein last year, the region contributed 28,000 metric tons in the national production performance.

With his glory, we can say in the DA that we greatly contributed to this by providing our coffee growers with different interventions through the AgriPinoy High Value Crops Development Program such as:
We already contributed the following interventions starting 2011:

 Intervention                                           Quantity                                            Total Amount
Coffee roasting Facility                                  7 units                                                       P10.5-M
Coffee Dehuller                                              56 units                                                      P7.28-M
Coffee Depulper                                             40 units                                                      P3.40-M
Coffee Planting Materials                        528,000 pieces                                             P10.56-M
                                                                                         TOTAL                         P31.74-M

As shown in the table, the more than 520,000 pieces of the coffee seedlings were planted to more than 475 hectares in different parts of the region particularly in sultan Kudarat being the biggest coffee producer in SOCCKSRAGEN.

Besides this, around 200,000 additional coffee seedlings are set to be distributed in the next few months.
The impacts of these interventions can be traced in the comments and expressions of gratitude by farmer groups that received projects under the AgriPinoy HVCDP.

Meantime, I strongly believe that through this congress, we will hear more pasasalamat from farmers.
On the other hand, the essence of this Coffee Congress lies more beyond that, we are here today to also educate ourselves gaining additional information about technology and marketing strategies that will gear up each one of you. As our partners, in helping our country complete in the ASEAN economic integration.

Moreover, congresses like this give time to every industry player of coffee to mingle with their colleagues. Through this, you are actualizing the spirit of ‘Kape-Yapaan’. This is an avenue for you to talk because, in every organization, communication plays a major role to its success.

Congratulations to all of you and more power to SOCCSKSARGEN Coffee Industry.
