Power tower bombed in Cotabato anew; Al Khobar eyed

KIDAPAWAN CITY: A steel pylon in North Cotabato province belonging to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) was bombed by unidentified elements early Wednesday, following a similar attempt on January 14, but the structure remained standing, authorities said.
Supt. Bernard Tayong, provincial police spokesman of North Cotabato, said an improvised explosive device (IED) went off at around 12:20 a.m. while another failed to explode, in an attempt to again topple the NGCP Tower No. 63, in Aleosan town.
No groups or individuals have claimed responsibility for the attack, Tayong said.
Authorities remained clueless as for the suspects and their motives behind the bombing of power grids in North Cotabato, but elements of the terrorist group Al Khobar, whose members are linked to the radical groups Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and Khilafah Islamiyah Movement, were being eyed.
Tayong said the explosion has damaged the tower’s two pillars, but the structure did not collapse. If the tower had collapsed, this could have caused massive brownouts in areas that rely for their electricity on the grid along the Kabacan-Sultan Kudarat 138-kV line. MOH SAADUDDIN
